Using Netscape 7.0 Composer


This page is designed to help you upload your work to the teacher/student server. It is not a Netscape composer Tutorial. However if you need one, check out John Adsit's tutorial.

Creating and Editing webpages is pretty simple in Netscape's Composer feature. After loading Netscape on to your computer, Run it. Access your teachers/students webpage by typing your web address into the address dialogue box: teachers.altschools.org/YOUR LOGIN (mine is teachers.altschools.org/tnellen Once YOUR web page (Now if you don't have a web page yet, no problem, continue with this cause you will have one) is on the screen go to Edit and select Preferences at bottom of drop down menu. In the middle of the screen you will see Home Page section:
use either teachers.altschools.org (216.73.53.12) OR students.altschools.org (216.73.53.13) respectively

Click on the Use Current Page button so this page is your home page; then OK to make it so.

Now we want to edit your home page.
You have two options: If it exists or if DOES NOT exist.

If it exists Do This:

  1. Click on File.
  2. Find Edit Page and click on it.
  3. A new window will open. Edit this page.
  4. When done we are ready to PUBLISH. (see Publishing below)

If it DOES NOT exist Do This:
  1. Click on File.
  2. Find Edit Page and click on it.
  3. A new window will open. Edit this page. You will have to highlight everything on this page and delete it before you add new text and links etc.
  4. When done we are ready to PUBLISH. (see Publishing below)

Publishing

  1. Click the File button again.
  2. Find and click Publish As NOT Publish You have to enter some info.
  3. There are two Tabs on the next screen: Publish and Settings.
  • First Press the Publish Tab on top, not the one at bottom of the screen:
  • Be sure the info you enter is similar to what you see here, but change the tnellen part to match your login.
  • The filename for your main page is called index.html so use this name for your main page. You will create a name for new files as you make them. It is suggested you use filename.html convention of lower case and simple, no spaces.html for all new files.

    Using the Publish Tab:

  • Now press the Settings Tab at top and enter this info.
  • Note you must change 2 things in the second box: change http to ftp and take out your login at end and replace with webdocs
  • Change tnellen to your info in the next two boxes.
  • Do NOT use save password feature unless you are the only user of this computer.

    Using the Settings Tab:

    When done press the Publish button at bottom of screen.
    If you are successful, you will know it from the screens that follow.

    When you are done either close this Edit screen and then refresh the page and see the changes OR locate the original page at bottom of screen and click on it to bring it to the front and press refresh.
