Metropolitan Corporate Academy Media Class

 

This year for the EDP, MCA produced a show called "THE CRIMINALIZATION OF YOUTH"- a look at how youth are often instantly thought of as "thugs". Guests included a panel of a rep from the NYPD, as well as staff from Friends of Island Academy- a program for previously incarcerated youth.

IM SIXTEEN YEARS OLD AND WAS BORN IN JAMAICA (West Indies), BUT RAISED IN THE EAST FLATBUSH SECTION OF BROOKLYN. THE TOPICS THAT WE DISCUSSED OPENED MY EYES AS WELL AS THE EYES OF MY PEERS TO LOOK AT THE ENVIRONMENT THAT WE LIVE IN. THIS EXPERIENCE WAS MOST DEFINITELY A POSITIVE ONE. My name is Rajiv Singh, I'm 15 and I am in the 9th grade. I'm reppin' Brooklyn. On my spare time when I'm not in the recording studio, I like to travel, hike and listen to music. For the past couple of months that I have been in Teen Talk, I enjoyed every moment that I have been in it. From planning the radio show and actually going on air was good till it's last second. I loved being inside the radio station and being part of the live broadcast to thousands of teens. Thanks to Teen Talk , I have been able to actually do what my favorite radio host have been doing. I can't believe that I had an opportunity like this to take advantage of.

 

Reflections of Teen Talk Experience On May 1st , 2003 we did a live radio show on criminalizing youth. I feel that the show turned out excellent. We talked about different issues regarding that one topic. Our guest for the show were two counselors from my school and a law police officer. Their comments were interesting, as well as the callers who called in. The show not only informed people on today's issues dealing with the law, but it gave listeners a better outlook on things and some ideas on how to change their community.

 

 Juan T. Santana May 14, 2003 My Biography: Conceived October, 1986 in Higuey, Dominican. And Born May, 1987 in the Bronx, NY. Soon after becoming Dominican Americans, that is my Father Tomas Santana, 53, my Mother Ceneida Santana, 50, & my Brother Elvis T. Santana, 20. I am currently a local tenth grader attending MCA High School, & working A part time job after school. I love rock music & play Bass guitar. I plan on pursuing a music career. I also attend the seventh day Adventist church of south Brooklyn. I am known for being very mature for my age. Hence, with my advanced knowledge what better than to join teen talk. Where I could be given a chance to share not just my intellect but my Christianity life style with other teens. And for that I am very appreciative of MCA for having these extra curricular activities. Thanks to teen talk, I finally got an opportunity to share my knowledge with fellow classmates as well as radio listeners. And that meant a lot to me because not many adolescents get a chance to recite what is on there my minds on the radio.
Annie's Bio: My name is Annie Ross. I live in Brooklyn. My birthday is June 13. (Gemini) I'm 15 years old. I go to Metropolitan Corporate Academy High School. I'm in the 10th grade. My hobbies are dancing, skating, going to party, swimming, reading and bowling. My favorite music is r&b;, hip-hop and urban soulful music. My favorite artists are Vivian Green, 50 Cent, Lil Kim, Biggie, and Mary J. My long-term goal is to become a Professional Dancer. I plan to be dancing with Alvin Ailey. My thought on the show was positive. When we started I felt it was going to come out bad because we started late. I felt like we were rushing and that we might forget something that is needed in the show. The show work out good, it was a huge success for the students that work on it. I feel it touched on a issue that is not really depicted in teen's life. This is my second time doing the Radio Talk Show, it make me feel good to be in something positive for a young adult can listen to. I had an excellent experience so if you have the chance to be on a Radio Talk Show, you should do it. The outcome is good.
