SHOW #3 : AIRED MAR. 15

'VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS...WHO IS RESPONSIBLE ? - for the problem...for the solution'

The students from the EDWARD A. REYNOLDS WEST SIDE HS(WSHS)....Steven Taylor-Hines, Jared Hines, Lydia Conway, Jennifer Perez, Joana Giacinto, Tanya Galloway and Yadira Rodriguez were joined by Robin Rula, Jeska KirkPatrick, Thomas Peacock and Dominic Valdez from Jefferson County Open School(JCOS) in Lakewood, Colo. near Littleton, Colo. The discussion covered school environments that create a sense of safety. Both WSHS and JCOS have an advisory period(often referred to as Family Group). This class counters monolithic groupings in Alternative Schools and serves as a safe place to discuss peer and community issues. Also joining us were Mark Washington and Bernard Skelton from The FRIENDS OF ISLAND ACADEMY, an alternative GED program that supports recently released students from Rikers Island. Mark and Bernard widened the perspective that all factors of a school environment must be considered and solutions have to be just.

The CITY KIDS FOUNDATION represented some very effective and creative solutions for facilitating safety in schools. Danny McGlone (Youth Coordinator), Lana Mack and Eddie Nieves are part of a team that performs in schools and before youth groups all over the Americas. CITY KIDS present thought provoking plays and skits on youth issues and then engage the audience in participating in finding realistic solutions.

A SPECIAL THANKS TO NORMAN SCOTT- teacher of the WSHS and RICK POSNER from JCOS.
