Dear SSP (small school people),
Central Park East I was visited by Shelley Harwayne. Her entourage =
(including a CSD#4 Dep. Sup't) made a perfunctory, 10 minute visit in =
search of "instruction". Their inability to recognize visible evidence =
of student work reflective of the depth of their interests left both =
staff and students shaken and does not bode well for our push for =
progressive networks. Do we have a wolf in sheep's clothing here?
Debbie Meier, founder of CPE I, CPESS and Center Collaborative =
Education, is organizing a national response in support of NYC's small =
schools. She will be asking folks across the country, via e-mail, to =
sign on to a letter/statement directed to the Chancellor/Regional =
Superintendents.
We are putting together a list of Friends of NYC's Small Schools. =
Debbie will be e-mailing them. Here's what you can do in the next few =
days.
Scour your address books, e-mail contacts, business card collections, =
rollo-dexes, conference participant lists, parent/graduate lists, etc.
Send in names of folks who know our schools from NYC and the nation, =
e.g. university people, CBO/collaborative partners, former =
Principals-4-a-Day, authors, reporters, poets, artists, professional =
development/support people, theraputic folks, etc.
Include a way to contact them, preferably e-mail. Don't worry about =
duplication, list all the Kozols and Kohls, we'll sort out double =
entries.
