Dear friends,
This Wednesday a broad array of groups are trying to organize over 
200,000 faxes and phone calls to the US Congress to stop the war on Iraq. 
The group http://www.truemajority.com/ is willing to fax your senator 
free of charge. They have a template fax, but you can recreate/rewrite 
your own. I plan on using this as an opporunity for a meaningful writing 
activity with my fifth graders. I will explain the nation wide effort, 
review who our US Senators are, explain the Senate's historic role (?) in 
declaring war, and brainstorm what we might want to say to the senators 
based on what we have studied. I will then have students work in small 
groups writing letters. I will do it in small groups instead of 
individually to encourage conversation about the issue. The groups will 
share their drafts with the whole class, and then one of the group 
members will revise the draft. I will help copy and paste their letters 
into the box allowed on the true majority web site.
FYI http//www.Moveon.org is organizing the direct call into the Senate 
offices.
Don't be discouraged if you have trouble accessing the two above web 
sites. There is such an upsurge in opposition to the war these sites are 
being flooded with hits.
