Dear folks,
This victory comes as the result of the heroic work of the Campaign for
Fiscal Equity. Congratulations! Now, we have to make sure that this money
actually shows up in the Department of Education's budget and is spent for good
things.

Special Alert from Insideschools:
* Huge Victory for NYC Schools! In what advocates are hailing as a historic victory for New York City's school children, the New York State Court of Appeals ruled that the state is not financing city schools adequately, and isn't providing an adequate education for city students. New York's state appellate court overturned the trial court decison last year, and the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) took it up to the Court of Appeal's, New York State's highest court, which reversed the appellate court decision. The court says the state has a year to come up with a plan to provide city students with a "sound basic education" and rejected the idea that this only means up to an 8th grade education. Michael Rebell, CFE's Executive Director said, "The Court has made clear in no uncertain terms that New York's children are more important than backroom politics. The Court joins the people of New York in agreeing that all children should have a true educational opportunity to succeed in the workplace and in life." Jill Chaifetz, Executive Director Advocates for Children, an institutional plaintiff in the suit, said "It's a great day for NYC's school kids. As a result of this we hope to see students getting the resources they constitutionally deserve for receiving the kind of education they need to succeed." See the Daily News at http://www.nydailynews.com/front/breaking_news/story/95797p-86793c.html and NY1 news at http://www.ny1.com/ny/TopStories/SubTopic/index.html?topicintid=1&subtopicintid=1&contentintid=31306 for more information about the important decision.
