I don't know if anyone out there is interested in this opening but it does
sound wonderful. If we don't know anyone here who is interested perhaps we
have friends out west who might be? Carol

The Drinking Gourd Elementary School in Eugene, Oregon is looking for an
elementary classroom teacher with a Rethinking Schools perspective. This
teacher will be responsible for teaching a group of 15 students, grade 3-5,
basic academics plus art, music, PE, Spanish, computer, and conflict
resolution skills.
Applicants must have teacher training and experience teaching similar age
groups. Experience in creating integrated curriculum units and materials is
necessary, as well as computer skills, basic Spanish, and familiarity with
anti-bias and peace education goals and methods. A special interest in visual
arts, music, dance, woodworking or science is a plus.
Salary: $30,000 plus health insurance.
The Drinking Gourd Elementary School is a small (27 students in the school),
progressive, nonprofit school with a close-knit, informal community where the
kids don't want to go home at the end of the day. The Drinking Gourd is a
strong, successful anti-bias program that teaches children to respect each
other, to see differences of all kinds as interesting rather than scary, to
think critically about our society, and to see the world from a global
perspective. The program actively works against gender stereotyping.
Cooperative decision-making, noncompetitive games and conflict resolution
contribute to the atmosphere and "kid-culture" of mutual encouragement. The
small class size means that teachers know each student's social and emotional
life as well as their academic levels; academic curriculum is completely
individualized. Director and K-2 teacher Trisha Whitney is the author of Kids
Like Us: Using Persona Dolls in the Classroom, and an acclaimed anti-bias
trainer.
The ideal candidate should be a high-energy person who teaches with
enthusiasm and puts children's needs first. You should be excited about
creating innovative integrated curriculum for this age group, using
manipulative-based math, inclusive social studies, and community service. We
are looking for someone with excellent communication skills who is willing to
work closely with parents and the lead teacher. The Drinking Gourd actively
encourages the participation of people of all races, religions, sexual
orientations, disabilities and class backgrounds.
