The math summit in Plainfield, N.J. on April 30th wasn't as informative =
as I had hoped it would be because the issues being discussed were very =
specific to the Plainfield community. Apparently, Plainfield schools are =
having difficulty recruiting and retaining what the community views as =
"competent" math and science teachers. Reportedly, Plainfield students =
are faring the poorest in these areas compared to other N.J. districts. =
Several mathematicians spoke and made suggestions about playing math =
games with children and developing an after-school math curriculum that =
involved parent and peer support. Dr. Sam Anderson (Medgar Evers College =
- Brooklyn) spent a bit of time encouraging Plainfield to re-implement =
Bob Moses's Algebra Project. (www.algebra.org). Anderson suggested that =
the project failed the first go-around because of lack of adequate =
parent involvement. Sorry, I'm able to share any groundbreaking news.
In other news: People United for Children, a parent-support group based =
in Harlem, filed a class-action suit against the Administration for =
Children's Services for removing children to foster care without a court =
order. The class was recently certified so the group can move forward =
with its suit. Next Thursday, May 8, 2003 at 6 p.m., the group will host =
the attorneys who filed the suit at Harlem's Emmanuel AME Church, 37 W. =
119th Street. Please share this information with parents are your school =
as the discussion might impact families that you know are involved with =
ACS or Family Court. =20
By the way, I love this forum! =20
