Thanks to all of you who have spoken out on the importance of a public voice in
school governance. For the moment, decisions about NYC public school
governance reform rest with the State Legislature and the courts.
As New York City starts to catch up with the rest of the country in chartering
schools, the issue of public input into school governance will take on a new
and more urgent dimension. Charter schools have become the latest attempt
to "reform" K-12 education. The Chancellor has spoken openly about his desire
to charter new schools. The NYC Department of Education has the authority to
charter schools on its own initiative. If we do not affirm a public role in
district school governance today, we will face even greater obstacle in
affirming a public role in charter school governance tomorrow.
Best wishes.
