COLLEGE NOW

EAST NEW YORK FAMILY ACADEMY BRANCH

"Where Educational Dreams Become Reality"

The College Now Program began this year in nineteen high schools partnered with six colleges throughout New York City. This ninth grade pilot program was designed to provide incoming freshmen students with a program of enriched instruction (with an emphasis on literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, language and career development) and enhanced support.

Although each program strives to achieve the same goals, each program has its own particular style. The East New York Family Academy College Now Program is very challenging yet very rewarding for every student participant. The pilot program provides the students with nine periods of instruction (as compared to the normal eight periods), smaller class sizes, enhanced guidance services, the involvement of college faculty and staff in the provision of professional development opportunities for high school teachers and/ or their direct involvement in the delivery of instruction to the ninth grade students and opportunities for students to experience a college environment (through Saturday programs of their equivalent).

The College Now Program at ENYFA provides students with a nurturing environment. Since the beginning of the school year, the students have adapted to the daily functions of the program. The College Now staff consists of four teachers and one guidance counselor. Each staff member is very dedicated to achieving the goals of the program, and each of them has provided after school services for further enrichment. The following is a run down of programs, trips and extra curricular activities that we have been involved in since the 2000/2001 school year began (college tour of Adelphi University, College For A Day, attended the play Twelfth Night, college tour of Brooklyn College, had first annual College Now Thanksgiving Banquet, food can drive for local homeless shelters, resume workshops, field trip to the Museum of Natural History, field trip to Fox television studio and host Black History month programs for the entire student body). We have much more to look forward to in the remaining months of this school year.Everyone involved in this exciting program works in collaboration with one another to accomplish these goals that are defined below:
