Write a letter to Paul and Carol about your work in PANYC. Let us know how you are doing this semester. Use the 3 categories in the form below to write your e-mail. Talk about work you've done over the past seven weeks that show your skills in each of these areas: (1) Communicating & Reflecting  (2) Creating & Revising  (3) Researching & Reading.

Use the language on this form to help you to say what you are able to do. But be sure to give specific examples of your work that demonstrate your abilities in each of the 12 points below.

Communicating & Reflecting
  • Students participate in small-group and whole-class discussions to clarify thinking, give opinions, test new ideas, and share knowledge.
  • Students use e-mail and a discussion board to contact and respond to teachers and other students to ask questions, give an opinion, give advice, or share knowledge.
  • Students use a discussion board to collect daily learning logs to describe what happened in class and what was learned.
  • Students keep a journal of freewriting--writing at least twice a week--to explore own thoughts and life experiences. (Strand Two keeps these in a MOO.)

Creating & Revising
  • Students combine writing with images, music, hyperlinks, and other media to create and update Web pages and Web sites, individually and with other students.
  • Students upload, update with new links and material, and manage Web sites about the content of their classes so that the work can be viewed locally and globally.
  • Students develop and build projects over time, using calculators, lab equipment, hammers, nails, protractors, rulers, pencils, paper, paint, brushes, markers, wood, and other materials and technology beyond computers. 
  • Students select and use appropriate software (e.g. Geometers' Sketchpad, Photoshop, FrontPage...) to learn the content of their classes and to make final digital products.

Researching & Reading
  • Students come up with concerns and questions about themselves and the world to investigate. They develop provocative themes and questions worth researching.
  • Students read independently and regularly in and out of class--at least 30 minutes a night.
  • Students identify books by genre and level of difficulty and select books that are challenging to read.
  • Students talk about the books they are reading with students in their own classes and other clusters. These conversations about books happen in class and on a discussion board.
