Legends Open Regular Season With a Thriller!

Written by Erik Shold on 11-26-2003

Landmark beat Humanities in OT in its first regular season game.

In a small gym packed with screaming Humanities High School fans, Kirk Miller tipped in a missed free throw to ice the victory in overtime. The Legends started off strong, building a 6 point lead in the first quarter behind the inside tandem of Jihad Ford and Kirk Miller and the penetration and passing of Gerald Fieulleteau. Late in the game, however, the crowd got involved and with two minutes remaining, the Legends found themselves down 6. The Legends played with heart, and used their rebounding and defensive intensity to come back and tie the game.

In the overtime period, the Legends went up by one point with 19 seconds remaining, then stole the ball from Humanities. Antonio Matos was fouled on his fast break layup attempt, and went to the line to shoot two. He hit the first to put Landmark up by two. The second shot bounced off of the back of the rim, but was tipped back in by Kirk Miller to put the game out of reach for Humanities.

It was a team effort for the Legends. Angel Lantigua had a career-high 10 assists, and Jihad Ford snatched a career-high 21 rebounds to go with his 18 points. Antonio led the Legends in scoring with 28. Kirk Miller had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Gerald Fieulleteau had 11 points and 7 assists. Kenneth Eaddy and Cecil Browning also made valuable contributions off of the bench.

The Legends were 2-1 in preseason games, and are off to a 1-0 start in league play. Their next game is Monday, Dec 1 at LaGuardia HS.
