Legends Win in Playoffs!

Written by Erik Shold on 02-11-2004

The Boys Basketball Team came back from a 14 point deficit to beat Brooklyn School / Global Studies 68 - 67 in B Division Playoffs.

The Legends got off to a rough start. Although they had a lower seed, Global Studies had a bigger team and play in a tougher division in Brooklyn. The athletic Global Studies team started off with a tough press and built a 12 - 2 lead in the first quarter.

Then, Landmark started to settle down and play good defense and smart basketball. Global Studies got into foul trouble, and Landmark's tough half-court defense gave them headaches. By halftime, the Legends led 25 - 24.

In the second half, Global jumped out to a lead again. This time it was their inside game that frustrated the Legends. By the end of the third quarter, Landmark was down by 14 points and it looked as though their best season ever would end in a mere 8 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Landmark turned up the intensity and applied their full-court press. They frustrated Global by forcing turnovers, and their offense exploded. Led by scoring from Antonio (9 points in fourth quarter) and Gerald (11 points in the fourth quarter, and a huge rebounding game from Cecil, the Legends chipped away at the lead.

With three minutes left, Landmark still trailed by 7, and it looked like the game might slip away. The Legends dug deep to find a second win, and a three point play with less than 2 minutes remaining tied the game at 62.

Antonio Matos went to the line to shoot two for a chance to put Global away. He hit his first shot to give Landmark their first lead since halftime, but the second shot was off the mark. Cecil crashed the boards and grabed a huge offensive rebound to keep the Legends alive.

Later, Gerald hit one of two free-throws to give Landmark a four point lead. Global brought the ball up the court and hit a three, but time expired before they could call a timeout. The game was over and the Legends would advance to the "sweet 16" of the B Division.

Landmark ended up scoring 34 points in the first three quarters, then 34 more in the fourth to fuel their comeback. Here are the scoring stats:

Angel- 5, 4 assists

Antonio- 21

Kenneth- 2, 4 assists

Jihad- 2, 4 rebounds

Kirk- 12, 6 rebounds

Gerald- 15

Cecil- 8, 14 rebounds

Reggie- 3, 3 assists

The date and opponent for the Legends' next game is not known yet. It will likely be against Fannie Lou Hamer later this week or during the week after Feb break.
