Black Steals One From Red in Extra Innings

Written by Dennis Joyce on 06-01-2004

Hector Nunez's leadoff triple abd Jennifer Escobosa's game winning single caps off a Tremendous 10-9 win. Red team's and League MVP Jonathan Flete's three Home Runs not enough to overtake Black.

Eric Shold, Jihad, Antonio, Kellman,....they have been here before. After a mediocre season this year they got hot at the right time. Last year they made the playoffs on the very last day of the season and went on to steal the title. Jihad led his crew going four for four, all singles, scoring three times and earning three rbi's. He also pitched four tough innings before being replaced by Erik, who showed nerves of steal closing out the game. and who also sacrificed his body on a diving slide home.

Hector Nunez played great, exploiting right field going 3 for 4, with two runs scored, one of which was the tenth and final one. Jay -Esco knocked him in with a well placed single up the right side of the infield, pulling Siu off of the base, his only play was home but the streaking Hector made it safely. Esco had an rbi in her previous at bat, also scoring Hector. Oni too had an rbi, along with two for Antonio and one for Kellman.

Red fought gallantly, fallin behind in the first by three, only to answer with four of their own, capped off with a three run HR by Flete. Siu played a noble game, going four for four with a HR, two rbi's, and three runs scored. but it will be the one he did not score on his final at bat that will haunt the Red team all winter, as he was called out at third trying to extend a double into a triple.

In Siu's defense, there was no 3rd base coach for one, and he may have felt the need to manufacture runs as the only people scoring were the top four batters for the Red team. In any case Flete was up next and we will never know what might have happened.

Red played minus their star rookie Daniel Bettencourt who injured his leg severely. They played a gutty game, we saw a web gem by Arienny in right field and J.ADON in left. Felix and jihad also made huge defensive plays in the extra inning.

Black will wait for the winners of the blues tomorre of which was the tenth and final one.
A final salute to Flete and Jill, who between them er with four of their own, capped off with a three run HR by Flete. Siu played a noble game, going four for four with a HR, two rbi's, and three runs scored. but it will be the one he did not score on his final at bat that will haunt the Red team all winter, as he was called out at third trying to extend a double into a triple.

A final salute to Flete and Jill, who between them played and starred for seven years here in the Landmark coed League,... they will surely be enshrined in the Landmark Hall of Fame.
