Great Thanks for Preparing Me for My Future!

Written by Jannessa Perez a.k.a Jann on 07-28-2004

Hello fellow students of Landmark High School. My name is Jannessa Perez and I was one of the first graduates from Landmark High School.

I graduated in the year 1997. My experience with Landmark High School was very different from all the other schools I attended. Landmark staff was more than just teachers and advisors. They were family. Still today, I consider them family especially Vivian and former principal Sylvia. Because of them, I am what I am today. Well, it all started when Landmark first opened their doors to their new students back in September of 1993.

Our classes were very small. I felt strange because I had just started high school and did not know anyone. We had about 10 to 12 students per class and on top of having small classes; we shared a school with about four or five other schools on 127th Street. That school did NOT have windows at all! We yet did not have our building to call "Landmark High School". If I am not sure, but I believe that Coalition, the school downstairs, was also in the school down on 127th Street. But finally, I made a few friends and, by the time I knew it, I knew everyone and everyone knew me. I felt as if I fitted in with the crowd and it was all because we gained trust with each other and we owe all to the teachers, Vivian and Sylvia.

When we finally had our building, it was a wrap. We made the best of the school. The staff grew, the students grew and our minds grew. We had an opportunity to see what to expect from college because Landmark Staff prepared us for the real world. Other high schools would not prepare you for what Landmark is doing for you. All the portfolios and presentations may be a headache but let me tell you that when you go out in the world after high school, you are going to say, "This is a piece of cake because Landmark High School prepared me for this." How I know is because I used that line in college and in job interviews. Now, I am a Monroe College graduate and I am now an Insurance Verification Representative at Saint Mary's Hospital in Waterbury Connecticut. I am a married woman and have a beautiful three year old son, Xavier, who says his name is Peter Parker and Spider man Perez.

I truly miss being a student at Landmark high school, running in the hallways in the last semester of school looking for an available computer to type up my portfolio work. I miss my principal Sylvia who is an outstanding person and a wonderful human being. Vivian, who also is an outstanding person, always on top of her students making sure they get things done and who is always there in the time of our needs. we owe all to the teachers, Vivian and Sylvia.

So students, please take care of the school and the staff the way they are doing to you. Landmark is a beautiful school and it is my home. Feel grateful for being in a different environment, for being treated as a person and family and not a student. Stay focused and I wish you guys the best of luck in your future. I don't have to worry about you guys failing because Landmark is a winner and everyone who is a Landmark student is a winner. Take care!
