Congratulations to Nayely

Written by Richard Stohlman on 03-07-2002

Landmark student, Nayely Gil, will be travelling to Mississipi with 1199 this spring break.

Thanks to an essay Nayely wrote, she will be travelling to Mississippi for serious study of the Civil Rights Movement. The Health Workers Union, 1199, is giving her and other the students the chance to study how the civil rights struggle of 30 years ago can be applied to the injustices of our era. Students will be studying Brown vs. Board of Education, the Sit-in Movement, the March on Washington, Voting Rights, and the Death of Martin Luther King. They will also be looking at ongoing economic, educational, housing and criminal justice issues. On March 30, the students will be flying to Jackson, Mississippi and they will return April 6th of April from Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations to Nayely and thanks to 1199 for offering the opportunity. Check back here for follow up stories from Nayely on how things went. Feel free to add an article or two of your own (simply go back to the front page and click on the word here and write away).
