Selected Writing...

Washington Irving made many writings. one of the writings that I found interesting is "The Devil &Tom Walker." In this story Irving concentrate on  a Germanic legend of Johann Faust, a 16th-century magician and alchemist who was said to have sold his soul to the devil in exchange for gaining money and power.

For retelling this story Irving created a character with the same characteristics as the man. The character faces the same problems and is in a American setting. The story takes place in the early 1700's when the puritans were in control of massachusetts society.

Here you have an example of a piece of excerpt of Irving story "The Devil & Tom Walker."

"One would think that to meet with such a singular person age, in the wild, lonely place, would have shaken any man's nerves; but Tom was a hard minded fellow, not easily daunted, and he had lived so long with a termagant wife that he did not even fear the Devil."

for me this part of the story was very powerful because it gave me an idea on what was the story about. After I finished reading the story I got to understand more what was Irving's purpose. He wanted us to notice how selfish, cheap, greedy and ambitious was Tom Walker.  I think that this was the most enjoyable and interesting story of the many we read in class.
