Dear 1 & ALL,
At last night's Steering committee meeting brief discussions were held on the following two items:
#1 - All PENNY schools are urged to support the March from NYC to Albany as part of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. All are welcome on the march. Join in for a day or more or all the way to Albany. School children can meet the marchers as they walk through Manhattan/Bronx throughout the May 1 start day. Contact jessica Garcia at 212-867-8455, x218 for more info or online at www.cfequity.org
#2 - RE: DOE "PASS" - Below is the e-mail we received from Diana Lam regarding the 'pass'
I write to inform you that we are providing your school with a one-year pass with respect to implementation of the new comprehensive approach to reading, writing and math. We took this action because your school did not have sufficient data upon which we could evaluate the achievement of your students in the relevant subjects.
We will convene a meeting in the next few weeks to discuss with you the full implications of a pass. At this meeting, we will also discuss what data we will use to assess your progress and the progress of other schools like yours. Please hold any questions you may have for that meeting. We will be in touch shortly to inform you of the meeting’s date, time and location.
It's in our interest to be well-prepared for this meeting. Once we get notice of a date we probably should get together perhaps at a regular PENNY meeting (next general meeting is Wednesday, April 30th).
In the meantime every school that received a 'pass' should let me know so I will be able to contact you with any additional information that we may learn of and a time when the PENNY "passers' will get together.
Thanks
Sid Massey
