Hi,
As another person who has just received a letter from Joel Klein in respons=
e
to a letter I wrote to him, I want to agree that while it=B9s wonderful tha=
t
communication lines seem to be opening, I don=B9t think that the demonstratio=
n
we are planning for next Wednesday is out of place. It certainly does not
have to be confrontational, I agree. But I think a =B3show of strength=B2, so
that when we do have a meeting he will know that we represent a fairly
good-sized (and vocal) constituency, is well-timed.
I also think, as an organizer, that it would send a very bad message to the
parents who have been working on this demonstration, esp. those who have no=
t
been graced with a visit to their school, to give up on a mass
demonstration in favor of a small meeting. I think lots of people are eage=
r
to have their voices heard, and for many of them, Tuesday night=B9s meeting
just furthered their frustration.
I also want to mention that the Chancellor visited our school, East Village
Community, at the same time as Children=B9s Workshop (we share a building) an=
d
my understanding from Lisa is that he made the same comment about all our
parents=B9 letters influencing him to visit the school. And yes, we did have
a lot of letters and petitions, but I know that a lot of other schools did
the same and have not (yet) received a visit. (I actually have a darker vie=
w
of why he visited these two schools).
While the letter I received just a few minutes ago was very kind and
thoughtful, it didn=B9t sound all that good to me, as far as the likelihood
of EVCS receiving a waiver. But maybe I=B9m just =B3depressed=B2 these days.
(quotation marks for Steve!)
Waivers aside, I suspect the good news in all of this is that while we migh=
t
not all get our waivers, it sounds like we might get our networks and staff
development pieces. So that would be great.
Linda
