About the Project

The Michael Mao ESL Dance Project - Learning English Through Dance, enhances the English speaking skills of immigrants and ESL (English as a Second Language) students. This Arts In Education immersion project develops the students' command of English through the study of the rudiments of modern dance.

Many urban ESL students participating in school programs are recent immigrants and many are 14 and older. Large numbers of these students fail to enter English-speaking classes; many drop out of school altogether, never mastering basic English skills.

These students are relegated to menial jobs and are "at risk" for victimization. Early intervention in their language training and cultural acclimation can make a real difference in their English acquisition and the quality of their future lives. They must master spoken English in order to have career and lifestyle choices.
