       For more than two hundred years, most African Americans who lived in the United States were slaves. The Civil War ended the sysewn of slavery.During the war, the northern states were called the Union, or the North. The southern states were called the Confederacy, or the South. The South no longer wanted to be part of the United States of America. Northerners wanted the United States to remain one country. They didn't think the southern states had the right to declare themselves a separate country. They  were willing to fight a war to keep all the states together. For Americans. the Civil War was fought to end slavery.

       The end came in the E, When Lee's force, diminshed by casualites, disease and desertions, evacuated both Richmond and Petersbury (Apr 1865) and attempted to move to join up with Johnston in North Carolina, However cut off by sheridan's cavalry, and pursued by Grant and Meade, he eventually surrrendered at Appomattox court House (Apr. 1860). The remained only isolated confederated units, the last of which surrendederd in June 1865
